We begin on water because it sets the register for everything that follows. Before the city wakes, farmers move through the mist to a market that exists only on the lake. A working ritual, not a performance, and a lesson in slowing down.

You are met at Srinagar airport and driven to Dal Lake through willow-lined roads, wooden houses and the first sight of snow on the peaks. Your home for the night is a traditional deluxe houseboat of walnut interiors and hand-carved detail. The day is deliberately unscheduled: time on the deck, decorated shikaras drifting past, and a Kashmiri dinner as the light softens over the water.
Before sunrise, a shikara carries you through the quiet inner canals to the floating vegetable market, traders exchanging lotus stems and fresh produce grown on the lake's floating gardens, with saffron Kahwa poured from a floating café. The afternoon belongs to craft: the Kani and Jamawar looms, genuine Himalayan Pashmina, hand-knotted silk carpets, walnut carving and papier-mâché. As evening comes, a visit to a Kashmiri family home closes the day with warmth rather than spectacle.
A morning drive through pine forest and village life climbs to Gulmarg, at 2,730 metres one of Asia's great mountain places. Weather permitting, the mighty Nanga Parbat appears on the horizon. The Gulmarg Gondola, among the highest cable cars in the world, lifts you toward Apharwat Peak and its Himalayan panorama, with snow or alpine walks depending on the season.
A scenic transfer brings you to Pahalgam, set on the Lidder River and framed by green meadows and clear mountain water, with a pause at a carpet workshop along the way. Pahalgam is where the journey slows again, and the pace is meant to.
A gentle day among the Aru and Betaab valleys, the latter named for the film shot amid its scenery, with room to walk, sit by the river and let the mountains do the talking. Natural pauses for rest and prayer are built into the day.
The return to Srinagar is unhurried, with photo stops among apple and walnut plantations and a pass by the saffron fields of Pampore, whose crocus harvest gives Kashmir its most precious spice.
A full day of heritage. The Mughal gardens, Nishat Bagh with its twelve terraces above the lake, Shalimar Bagh built by Jahangir for Noor Jahan, and Pari Mahal on the hillside, give way in the afternoon to Srinagar's living heart: the great wooden Jamia Masjid with its 378 deodar pillars, the riverside Khanqah-e-Moula, the Naqshbandi shrine, and a slow walk through the old city's spice markets and heritage lanes.
After breakfast, an unhurried transfer to Srinagar airport for your onward flight, and home with a quieter, more considered picture of Kashmir than most travellers ever see.
